Top musicians line up for environment day

folk, jazz and soul musicians showcase their talents at the Sunshine Coast World Environment Day FestivalCaring for the environment will not be the only thing on people’s minds when local folk, jazz and soul musicians showcase their talents at the Sunshine Coast World Environment Day Festival on June 28, 2009.

Well known local entertainer Jay Bishoff secured some of the nation’s hottest acts for the event and as a result Festival-goers are encouraged to bring their chairs or picnic blankets to enjoy the main stage music.

According to Mr Bishoff, “Acts such as The Express and Harii Bandhu provide a cultural sophistication, featuring world-class guitar work and stunning jazz influenced vocals. The headline act alone (Tijuana Cartel) is enough to draw hundreds of live 'world music' lovers from afar; the music is contagious for children and adults; the informal dance areas are filled within minutes throughout the performance.”

Tijuana Cartel mixes the sounds of the Middle East with electronic world beats and Latin percussion. Vocalist, guitarist and co-producer Paul George, says he wants people to enjoy their set and celebrate the music.

“It’s all about being uplifted - the whole aim of the set is to get people dancing and celebrating,” Mr George says. “We love what we do and I’m sure you will feel that energy - energy is the key.”

This is Tijuana Cartel’s first appearance at a World Environment Day Festival, however Mr George says the band are looking forward to entertaining crowds on the day for a worthy cause.

“We try to ‘walk the talk’ and being a part of such a day is something right up our alley. I think the whole band agrees this event seems a very worthy cause with our heart centred intentions,” Mr George says.

“We try to live our everyday lives with a care for the environment… it seems highly likely we will be getting involved more and more in supporting things we believe in as we find our feet in the industry.”

The 29th annual World Environment Day Festival on the Sunshine Coast is focused on the United Nation’s theme “Your planet needs you - unite to combat climate change.”

The festival is a multi-faceted event, offering not only great entertainment, but also short films, children’s interactive workshops, market and craft stalls and how-to workshops on living in an environmentally aware household.

The World Environment Day Festival will be held at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Sunday 28 June from 9am to 4pm.
