Crucial votes ahead
Dec 1st, 2007 | By Editor | Category: EditorialIt is obvious that not all Sunshine Coast residents will welcome the State Government’s forced amalgamations and, as a consequence, the new regional council.
Democracy has been threatened in our region from several angles over the past year, with the prime example being the Traveston Dam. The amalgamations, especially in the Noosa Shire, have been seen as a threat to not only the local environment, but also on the rights of residents to decide their future.
However, it is also important to look ahead to ensure the best possible outcomes are achieved. Sunshine Coast residents should encourage candidates who have the capability to develop policy to ensure our region does not become another seaside urban conglomerate and, who can differentiate between vested interests and community aspirations.
Eco believes that a new regional council may present an opportunity for a future where development is wisely limited by local environmental conditions. A future where councillors truly listen to the ratepayers they serve, while protecting and enhancing the region’s biggest drawcard - the environment.
Unlimited growth is by definition unsustainable, and it is sustainability that we must urgently aim for while we have the opportunity. Responsibility for the future will firmly rest in the hands of the new councillors, so it will be up to the public to vote wisely.
A final word before Christmas
In April ‘08, Eco will focus on sustainable building and urban design. Contributions are always welcome but please contact the Editor to discuss.
In the meantime Eco would like to wish all our readers a very happy and safe Christmas. We hope you have enjoyed reading the first eight editions of our proudly independent newspaper.
The entire Eco team would like to thank our contributors, our tireless distributors and of course our advertisers. Without your help we would simply not exist.
We look forward to producing an even better Eco in 2008. Until then, take care and look after one another.
